21. యత్తు ప్రత్యుపకారార్థం ఫలముద్దిశ్య వా పున: |
దీయతే చ పరిక్లిష్టం తద్దానం రాజసం స్మృతమ్ ||
🌷. తాత్పర్యం :
ప్రతిఫలవాంఛతో గాని, సకామఫలవాంఛతో గాని, అయిష్టతతో గాని ఒనరింపబడు దానము రజోగుణమును కూడినట్టిదని చెప్పబడును.
🌷. భాష్యము :
దానము కొన్నిమార్లు స్వర్గలోకప్రాప్తి కొరకు గాని,అతికష్టముతోను మరియు “ఎందుకు నేనీ విధముగా ఇంత ఖర్చు చేసితిని” యనెడి పశ్చాత్తాపముతో గాని ఒనరింపబడుచుండును. మరికొన్నిమార్లు అధికారి విన్నపము ననుసరించి మొహమాటముతో అది చేయబడు చుండును. ఇట్టి దానములన్నియును రజోగుణమునందు ఒసగబడినవిగా చెప్పబడును.
అదేవిధముగా పలుధర్మసంస్థలు వివిధ సంఘములకు దానము లొసగుచుండును. ఆ సంఘములందు ఇంద్రియభోగమే కొనసాగుచుండుట వలన అటువంటి దానములు వేదములందు నిర్దేశింపబడలేదు. కేవలము సాత్త్విక దానమే వాని యందు ఉపదేశింపబడినది.

🌴 Chapter 17 - The Divisions of Faith - 21 🌴
21. yat tu pratyupakārārthaṁ
phalam uddiśya vā punaḥ
dīyate ca parikliṣṭaṁ
tad dānaṁ rājasaṁ smṛtam
🌷 Translation :
But charity performed with the expectation of some return, or with a desire for fruitive results, or in a grudging mood is said to be charity in the mode of passion.
🌹 Purport :
Charity is sometimes performed for elevation to the heavenly kingdom and sometimes with great trouble and with repentance afterwards: “Why have I spent so much in this way?” Charity is also sometimes given under some obligation, at the request of a superior. These kinds of charity are said to be given in the mode of passion.
There are many charitable foundations which offer their gifts to institutions where sense gratification goes on. Such charities are not recommended in the Vedic scripture. Only charity in the mode of goodness is recommended.
