20. దాతవ్యమితి యద్దానం దీయతే(నుపకారిణే |
దేశే కాలే చ పాత్రే చ తద్దానం సాత్త్వికం స్మృతమ్ ||
🌷. తాత్పర్యం :
ప్రతిఫలవాంఛ లేకుండా సరియైన ప్రదేశమున మరియు సరియైన సమయమున తగినవానికి స్వధర్మమనెడి భావముతో ఒనర్చబడు దానము సత్త్వగుణమును కూడినదిగా భావింపబడును.
🌷. భాష్యము :
ఆధ్యాత్మిక కర్మలందు నియుక్తుడైనవానికి దానమొసగవలెనని వేదములందు ఉపదేశింపబడినది. విచక్షణారహిత దానము వాని యందు ఉపదేశింప బడలేదు. ఆధ్యాత్మిక పూర్ణత్వమే సర్వదా ప్రధాన ప్రయోజనమై యున్నది.
కనుకనే దానమును తీర్థక్షేత్రమునందు కాని, గ్రహణ సమయములందు కాని, మాసాంతమున కాని, యోగ్యుడైన బ్రాహ్మణునకు గాని, భక్తునకు గాని, దేవాలయమునకు గాని ఒసగవలెనని ఉపదేశింపబడినది. అటువంటి దానమును ప్రతిఫలాపేక్ష రహితముగా ఒనరింపవలెను.
ధనహీనులకు కొన్నిమార్లు కరుణాస్వభావముతో దానమొసగినను, దానము గ్రహించువాడు పాత్రుడు కానిచో అట్టి దానము ఆధ్యాత్మికపురోగతికి దోహదము కాజాలదు. అనగా విచక్షణారహిత దానము వేదములందు ఉపదేశింపబడలేదు.

🌴 Chapter 17 - The Divisions of Faith - 20 🌴
20. dātavyam iti yad dānaṁ
dīyate ’nupakāriṇe
deśe kāle ca pātre ca
tad dānaṁ sāttvikaṁ smṛtam
🌷 Translation :
Charity given out of duty, without expectation of return, at the proper time and place, and to a worthy person is considered to be in the mode of goodness.
🌹 Purport :
In the Vedic literature, charity given to a person engaged in spiritual activities is recommended. There is no recommendation for giving charity indiscriminately.
Spiritual perfection is always a consideration. Therefore charity is recommended to be given at a place of pilgrimage and at lunar or solar eclipses or at the end of the month or to a qualified brāhmaṇa or a Vaiṣṇava (devotee) or in temples. Such charities should be given without any consideration of return.
Charity to the poor is sometimes given out of compassion, but if a poor man is not worth giving charity to, then there is no spiritual advancement. In other words, indiscriminate charity is not recommended in the Vedic literature.
